Top 10 Best 35mm Film Cameras for Beginner Photographers | From the Nikon FE2 to the Pentax K1000 to the Holga 135bc to the Canon AE-1 Program

I’ve used quite a few 35 mm film cameras over the years and they each have a special place in my heart. However, there are a few that I’d recommend over others if you’re a beginning photographer or just getting into film photography. Film & digital photography are wildly different adventures, in my personal opinion. Digital photography is great in it’s own right, but every film camera has it’s own personality. They aren’t replaceable. Their internal software can’t be updated. They work when they want to work. It’s all part of the fun of film photography. It also teaches you how to live in the moment. You can’t see the photo you just took on the back of the camera. You have to wait to get the film developed. So the moments you capture are real and unedited. Once an image is ingrained in film, the negative exists in a drawer forever, not on your hard drive. As you can tell, I’m just a little bit obsessed with film photography. :) I wanted to share 10 of the best 35mm film cameras for beginner photographers (in my opinion, of course) and why I recommend each one!

1. Nikon FE2/FE3

The Nikon FE2 is one of the pricier 35 mm cameras that I own, but it’s also the one 35 mm camera I won’t leave home without. I use the Nikon NIKKOR 50 mm f/1.4D lens and I’m absolutely obsessed with the way the photos look. They are dreamy, sharp, and beautiful. It’s definitely the most professional, sharpest 35 mm camera in my collection and I can’t imagine ever selling it. If you’re looking for a 35 mm camera that borders on amateur/professional, or you want room to grow, this is a great option. It has a dedicated aperture priority mode which is why I included it in this list. You don’t have to fully understand photography to be able to use this camera. You choose the aperture and the camera will do the rest for you. However, the lens itself is fully manual so you do have to focus the image yourself. It takes some getting used to, but there is something truly magical about this camera. The Nikon FE3 is similar, so either one is a great choice. It also has a dedicated multiple exposure option, which is why I went with this camera over a few of the other 35 mm cameras in this price range. This allows for creativity and experimentation once you get the hang of shooting film. :) You can read my full review of the Nikon FE2 here or you can watch my YouTube videos about the Nikon FE2 here or here!

2. Canon AE-1 Program

I don’t personally own a Canon AE-1 Program myself, but I convinced my sister to buy one and we made a YouTube video about it while we were traveling in Budapest together. You can watch our video on my YouTube channel here! The Canon AE-1 Program is sort of a cult classic. Everyone loves this camera. Everyone will be jealous of you if you own this camera. I’m jealous that my sister has one! But my Nikon FE2 is quite similar to it in terms of the features and settings, so it doesn’t make sense for me to get one at this time in my life. Maybe one day! What’s nice about the AE-1 is that it includes a full Auto setting, which basically makes it a point-and-shoot camera, but with much better results! You still have to manually adjust the focus, but the camera will automatically set the shutter speed and aperture. It’s an incredible camera and perfect for beginners who are just starting out with film photography. Whenever my sister shows me her photos from her travels, I’m always blown away. The focus can be a little difficult to get right, but if you’re patient and willing to learn, you can get some absolutely stunning images. This is another one of those cameras that you’ll never want to sell. This one will stay in your collection for a lifetime.

3. Holga 135BC 35 mm Camera

You guys know I’m obsessed with the Holga 120 GCFN. But I’ve recently gotten into the Holga 135BC, which is the 35 mm version of the camera. You can read my full blog post about the 35 mm version here and see tons of sample images or watch my YouTube video here! The Holga, in general, is in a league of it’s own. It’s sort of an acquired taste. They can be notoriously finicky, but they are also a true testament to the magic of film photography. Holga cameras are known for their quirks and light leaks, but they are also known for creating surreal, unusual images. Many of my favorite images I’ve ever taken have been with a Holga. The 35 mm version is a great place to start if you’re interested in challenging yourself or getting creative. There is nothing more exciting to me than getting back a roll of Holga film. You just never know what you’re going to get! I will say this - if your first roll of film doesn’t turn out, you have to try again. It takes a few rolls to get the hang of it, but I promise you, it’s worth it. Plus, these cameras are incredibly cute up on the shelf too, so if you get tired of it or need a break, just set it up on the shelf for decoration! I have over a dozen Holgas now because they come in lots of different colors. If you’re interested in reading more about the 120 version of the Holga, you can check out my blog post about it here. My sister actually received a 35 mm Holga from her husband for Christmas one year, and it’s become one of her go-to travel cameras. It took her a few tries to understand how the camera works, but now she loves it and brings it on every trip with her now!

4. Minolta Maxxum STsi

The Minolta Maxxum STsi is my secondary go-to 35 mm camera when I travel. It’s really hard for me to leave it behind because it has a special mode that is difficult to find on most 35 mm film cameras - a panorama mode. Some people could care less about the panorama mode, but for me, it’s a necessity when I’m traveling. I’m often at the top of a mountain or bell tower and find myself wanting to capture the entire scene. The panorama mode on my phone just doesn’t cut it for me. I used to use the Vivitar IC101 camera for panorama photos while I was traveling, but when I found the Minolta Maxxum STsi, it immediately replaced it because the images are much, much sharper. Not to mention, it’s extremely easy to switch to the pano mode. There is a little lever on the side of the camera that you can switch at any time in the middle of a roll of film. And you can switch it as many times as you’d like! You can check out my YouTube video and blog post about the Minolta Maxxum STsi if you want more info!

5. KS Super II

This is one of the newest additions to my collection and I just recently posted a YouTube video and blog post about this camera too! The KS Super II was actually released under the department store brand, Sears, in the 1980s. I was lucky enough to get one in super good condition and I’ve only shot a few rolls with it so far. However, it’s simple to use and a great camera for traveling. It has an Aperture Priority setting as it’s main “Auto” setting, and then a flash setting. While this camera is a bit limited in terms of creativity and features, it’s great if you’re looking for a starter camera with a decently sharp lens at a good price. It has a cute, rugged metal alloy frame and has that classic 80s camera vibe. While I’d put this one a step below the Canon AE-1 Program and Nikon FE2, it still takes lovely photos and is super fun to use. I took it with me on a beach day and love how the photos turned out. I won’t be selling mine anytime soon, also because it was a hand-me-down from a family member. But the shutter sound is very satisfying and it just feels nice in your hand. I’m looking forward to trying this one out a bit more!

6. Pentax K1000

While I don’t own a Pentax K1000, it was the camera that I almost went with before being convinced to buy the Nikon FE2. I had a photographer friend who shot with the Pentax K1000 and I loved how her photos looked. But after chatting with a sales associate at a used camera store, I realized that the Nikon FE2 was more suited for me because of the multiple exposure setting. However, if multiple exposures aren’t your jam, the Pentax K1000 is an amazing 35 mm camera. It’s another one of those cult cameras that can be somewhat difficult to get your hands on for a good price. But it has that classic silver and black body and super sharp lenses if you go with ones like the Pentax 50 mm f/1.4 or the 28 mm f/2.8 lens. I’m still hoping to get my hands on one of these someday. If you stumble upon one, don’t leave it behind!

7. Pentax PC35AF-M

The Pentax PC35AF-M sort of snuck up on me. I have no idea where I got it from or how it ended up in my collection. It’s a point-and-shoot 35 mm camera with a pop-up flash from the 1980s. I was pleasantly surprised by the sharpness of the lens, but it’s not surprising considering it’s a Pentax with an f/2.8 lens. The only downside is that the battery compartment tends to pop open a lot, but I just make sure to keep it taped shut! This is another camera that I’ve only used a handful of times but it’s a great camera for travel because it’s compact and simple to use. I took it with me to Boston and Salem, Massachusetts not too long ago and I love the photos I ended up with. It does not have a multiple exposure function though, so for me, it won’t be coming with me on all of my adventures. However, I might bring it out for a day trip or a wedding every once in a while. :) You can read more about it on my blog here.

8. Canon Rebel G

The Canon Rebel G is very special to me because it’s the camera my mom used when I was kid to capture our every day moments. And I mean, the very camera in the photo above is the one she used. It’s funny how those photos from our childhood seem to have such a specific tone and mood to them. But it also has to do with the film they used to make back in the day. Unfortunately, a lot of those film stocks don’t exist anymore, but I find that I can get pretty close with Fujifilm 400 35 mm film or Kodak Gold 200 35 mm. This camera has a ton of different features and settings, so if you’re looking to get creative, you’ll probably enjoy using this camera. It has modes like sport, portrait, macro, multiple exposure, night, etc. It also has a full auto mode so if you just want to keep it simple, you can do that too! I have a YouTube video and blog post about this one too, of course. :)

9. Minolta Hi-Matic AF2

The Minolta Hi-Matic AF2 is another standard point-and-shoot camera, so if you’re looking for the most basic cameras that are the easiest to use, the point-and-shoots are the way to go. It’s exactly what it sounds like - you just point, and shoot! You don’t have to adjust any settings or waste time focusing the lens. The lens is autofocus and the camera will automatically set the best aperture and shutter speed to get the correct exposure. I took the Minolta Hi-Matic with me to Portugal last year and tested it out for the first time. It was such a perfect camera for travel because of it’s simplicity. I’m definitely planning on trying this one out again soon! You can read my blog post about it here, or watch our YouTube video about this camera in Portugal here!

10. Canon Rebel K2

My beloved Canon Rebel K2. While some might argue that there’s nothing special about this camera, I’d beg to differ. The Canon Rebel K2 was my very first 35 mm camera and I still remember my first roll of film I ever shot with it. There is a nostalgia to the images that I just die for every time. It’s traveled with me all over the world and has been there for me on so many different occasions. I love my Canon Rebel K2 so much. When friends and family members who are at the very beginning of their photography journey ask me which camera they should get, the Canon Rebel K2 is always my first recommendation. It has a full Auto setting, but also has a ton of different settings and features for getting more creative or learning more about photography. You can graduate all the way to using this camera fully manually if you’d like to. It’s also super affordable. The Canon Rebel G that I mentioned earlier is very similar to this camera, but for some reason, I just like the photos of the Rebel K2 a bit better. I also use a zoom lens with my Canon Rebel K2, which allows it to be much more versatile when traveling. I can zoom in and get a beautiful portrait, or I can zoom out and capture a full city street. It also has autofocus, so you don’t have to waste your time trying to get the focus right. Of course I have a full blog post and YouTube video about this one too, if you’re interested in seeing sample photos or reading more about it. :)

2024 Gift Guide for Photographers | The 20 Best Gift Ideas for the Artist in Your Life

It’s Gift Guide time! I truly don’t understand how it’s already December… this year has been a blur of travel, work, blogging, YouTube videos, and now, a new little puppy! We just picked up our new girlie a few days ago. Our lives have been flipped upside down but she’s already starting to feel like a part of the family. All of this to say, it’s taken me a bit longer than expected to put this Gift Guide together. :)

If you’re looking for something for the photographer, videographer, or artist in your life, I hope this guide helps to give you a few ideas!

1. HOLGA GCFN OR DIANA F+

It’s no secret that the Holga is my favorite camera in the world. I still remember my very first roll of film I ever took and how enamored I was with the photos. There is something so magical about it’s unpredictability. I have a full blog post and YouTube video about the Holga too, in case you’re interested in finding out more about it! The Diana F+ is very similar to the Holga and also falls into the “toy camera” category. I find the Diana F+ to be a bit more tricky to use, but the images also have that vignetting and surreal quality that toy cameras are known for. A Holga or Diana F+ is a great gift for photographers of any level because when it really comes down to it, they’re super easy to use. There aren’t a whole lot of settings to learn or deep knowledge of aperture and shutter speed. The trickiest part is understanding the quirks of toy cameras, but that’s part of the fun of these cameras; learning as you go. Not to mention, they look super cute on a shelf! I prefer the GCFN model, which has a glass lens and a flash. The Holga typically can be found in black, but you can find lots of other fun colors on eBay! Every photographer I know loves the Holga once they try it out. Personally, the Holga is what made me fall in love in photography and I never leave home without it!

2. SQUARESPACE OR SMUGMUG SUBSCRIPTION

There’s really nothing more important for a photographer to have than a website. For someone who is just starting out, a website can be an expensive and confusing investment. I use Squarespace and I absolutely love it. The templates are incredibly easy to use and understand. You don’t need to be a website designer to have an amazing website. I’ve tried out a few other options like Wordpress and Wix, but I find that you need a much deeper understanding of web design and code to really make a great site. I actually have 3 Squarespace websites that I run now because I love it so much!

For photo storage for my clients, I use Smugmug. I’ve been using it for years and years, mostly for wedding photography but also for my own personal photo storage. I have the Portfolio plan so it comes with unlimited storage and I just upload my photo sets directly from Lightroom. I even have my phone set to auto-upload so it’s basically like cloud storage, but better. The app is great too because I can download any photo at any time for posting to social media. It’s also SO incredibly important to have some sort of online storage in case something happens to your physical hard drives. I always make sure to backup my photos in multiple places, but I feel so much better once I upload them to Smugmug because I know my photos won’t disappear if my house burns down. Terrifying to think about, but I can’t imagine if something happened to all of my photos!

3. SOCIETY6 PRINTS AND PRODUCTS

If you’re thinking of buying something arts-supportive for your creative friend or family member, Society6 is a website that artists upload their work to and then can sell products from. There are so many different product options: coffee mugs, pillowcases, shower curtains, clocks, bathroom mats, framed prints, blankets, etc. It’s a great way to support other artists because they get to set their own earning percentage. I’ve been using Society6 forever and my family and I love to gift each other things from the site. You can check out my Artist Page here, or you can browse designs by hundreds of thousands of other artists. It’s so much better than buying some random framed art print or coffee mug from Walmart or some other major retailer because on Society6 you’re supporting super small, unknown artists who deserve the recognition and truly appreciate the sale and support. Every time I sell a print on Society6 it makes my day!

4. UNIQUE FILM STOCK

There’s nothing more exciting to me than trying out a new film stock. There are so many different options out there and really, you can’t go wrong. Film typically comes in two options, 35 mm or 120 (also called medium format). There are other sizes of film too, but these are the main options. Just make sure you’re buying the right one for the camera! Personally, I love Lomography and all of their strange and unique film stocks like LomoChrome Purple and LomoChrome Turquoise, but I also love their standard color film stock too. Kodak is probably the most common and most consistent film brand, and Kodak Gold 200 is a great one for beginners and has a gorgeous warm tone to it. I find Fujilfilm 35 mm film to have a classic greenish tint to it that reminds me of the 90s, which is super fun too. And if you really want to impress your photographer friend, buy them Portra 160, Portra 400, or Portra 800. This film is the best of the best, but it’s pricey, so a photographer will always appreciate if you buy it for them! You can also check out my blog post about Unique Film Stocks for 35 mm Cameras here or my Top 5 Favorite Color Films for 35 mm Cameras here. Sometimes, I just browse Amazon and pick up one I’ve never seen before, but if you’re not quite there yet or want some guidance, here are a few I’d recommend.

Lomography LomoChrome Purple

Lomography LomoChrome Turquoise

Lomography Color 400

Lomography Lady Grey B&W 400

5. CUTE CAMERA BAG

I’m actually getting a new vegan leather camera bag this year for Christmas and I cannot wait. My old camera bag is literally bursting at the seams because of how many cameras I stuff into it. There are so many great, affordable camera bags out there and I’m so glad they’ve finally started making cuter ones. When I first got into photography, all of the camera bags were unbelievably ugly and definitely not meant for women. I’m thrilled that there are finally some great options out there. I also go for the biggest option available, but that’s only because I drag 5-10 cameras with me on every photo shoot. But I desperately wish I could be that photographer that just has a cute side satchel with one 35 mm camera and two lenses. Must be nice….

You can find a ton of options on Amazon or Adorama! But here are a few I personally like!

6. PROFESSIONAL DSLR CAMERA

If you’re on the hunt for a big gift and they are serious about starting a photography career, the Canon 5D Mark IV is the perfect gift. You can read my full review about the 5D Mark IV here. It’s my main camera that I use to photograph weddings, food photography, portraits, bands, landscapes, everything. When I first started my business, I bought the Canon 5D Mark II, an earlier version of the Mark IV. It carried my business for the first 5 years or so and I definitely attribute my early success to it’s capabilities. It made me a better photographer because the images were just simply, better! It kept me inspired for years. It traveled with me all over the world. It survived drops, spills, salty ocean mist, squished camera bags, and dozens of weddings. These things are STURDY. I’m equally as obsessed with my 5D Mark IV, especially because it’s that much better than the Mark II. It has dual-camera slots so I don’t have to worry about a faulty memory card at weddings. It has incredible low-light sensitivity, video modes, multiple-exposure options, and lens options. My all-time favorite lens is the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 II L USM lens, but I also love the 50 mm f/1.2 L lens for portraits and travel, because it’s much lighter and smaller and takes stunning, cinematic images. You can read my full blog post about the 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens here, or the 50 mm f/1.2 lens here. If there’s someone in your life who has mentioned wanting to start a photography business but they’re afraid to dive in, the Canon 5D Mark IV has the potential to change their life and get them creating.

7. TRAVEL POWER BANK/PORTABLE CHARGER

Umm. These are an absolute necessity. I’m on my phone at all times, sending emails, editing photos, posting on social media. My phone dies quickly. If your photographer friend travels a lot, these can be an actual lifesaver. Particularly for adventurers, or photographers who love to camp in the woods or explore national parks and photograph landscapes, a battery pack like this can keep them safe and accessible at all times.

8. KEH CAMERA OR ADORAMA GIFT CARD

If you’re not quite sure what to get the photographer in your life, but they are interested in film photography or buying gently used photography gear, KEH Camera is the best. They have a huge inventory of vintage cameras and gently used modern cameras. Every camera is graded so you know exactly what condition you’ll be getting. Plus, for me, they’ve always been great with returns or helping you out if there’s something wrong with one of your vintage cameras. They know a lot about gear and it’s not unusual for vintage cameras to have a few weird quirks that you have to work through. Adorama is another great site if you’re looking for photography gear. Both of these are great options if you’re looking for gift cards that are photography-specific. That way, they can pick out exactly what they want!

9. M4 MACBOOK PRO LAPTOP

Another necessity for serious photographers. You simply can’t be a professional photographer without a fast computer with LOTS of storage. Well, I mean, you could, but your life might be difficult! I use my computer all day every day. I’m a huge supporter of Macbooks because they tend to last forever. I’ve somehow never had one die on me, but I take extremely good care of them and make sure to never drop them or spill anything on them. When I travel, I make sure to keep it safe in a protective laptop sleeve and I never leave it out in the cold or extreme heat. Currently, I use the M1 Macbook Pro, which I’ve had since 2020, but if you’re looking for the best, I’d recommend the latest 2024 Macbook Pro with the M4 Pro chip or the Macbook Pro with the M4 Max chip. Also, there’s nothing better than opening Apple packaging on Christmas morning. It’s so satisfying because their packaging is impeccable!

10. EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

While Smugmug is my favorite online storage, it’s also necessary to have desktop storage. When I’m working on a big project like a YouTube video or editing a wedding, I work from an external hard drive. If you get one that has a lot of space, like a Seagate Expansion 8TB hard drive, you don’t have to bog down the hard drive on your computer, which ultimately slows your computer down. I keep my hard drives extremely organized by year, month, and photo shoot. It’s super therapeutic for my OCD mind too. Every time I fill one up, I just get another one! And I then have my files automatically backed up to Backblaze, which is super affordable cloud storage. It’s a bit different than Smugmug, because Backblaze is automatic and runs in the background. It’s a mirror image of your hard drives and your computer (in case it crashes). Smugmug is more-so for client storage and uploading finalized images. Maybe it’s a bit of overkill on my end, but my biggest fear in life is losing all of my photos!

11. FUN NEW 35 MM FILM CAMERA

There is nothing more beautiful than a classic, vintage 35 mm camera. The Canon AE-1, Pentax K1000, and the Nikon FE2 and FE3 are a few of the more common options that fall in this category. I have the Nikon FE2 and it is, by far, the best 35 mm camera I own. The photos are gorgeous, crisp, and high-quality. I actually went into the camera store thinking I was going to buy the Pentax K1000, but the store associate helped me to realize the Nikon FE2 was better for me because of it’s ability to do multiple exposures easily. I’m so glad I listened to them because I’ve taken some incredible multiple exposures over the years! I absolutely love my Nikon FE2 and it’s one of those cameras that I simply can’t leave home without. You can read my blog post about the Nikon FE2 here or watch my YouTube video here! No camera collection is complete without a classic 35 mm camera. My sister has a Canon AE-1 and she loves it as much as I love my Nikon FE2! We even made a YouTube video about the Canon AE-1 when we were in Budapest together. :)

If they are into medium format, the Mamiya 645 AF and Pentax 645 are incredible options. I actually received the Mamiya 645 for Christmas one year and it was truly one of the best gifts I’ve ever gotten! I eventually upgraded to the Contax 645, but I still miss my Mamiya 645 dearly. There was something special about that camera! You can watch my YouTube video about the Mamiya 645 here or read my full blog post about the Contax 645 here!

12. NEW CAMERA LENS

if they only have a zoom lens, buy them a fixed lens and vice versa! Two of my favorite lenses for my Canon 5D Mark IV are the 24-70 mm f/2.8 II L USM lens (zoom lens) and the 50 mm f/1.2 L lens (fixed lens). Depending on which camera they have, a 35mm, 50mm, or 85 mm lens is always a great option. 35 mm lenses are great for photographers with a photojournalistic style of photography and prefer candid, playful shots. A 50 mm lens is super versatile and great for portraits, travel photography, wedding photography, etc. The images are cinematic and dreamy, with a surreal quality that can really amp up your photography game. Images from a 50 mm lens can really impress your friends and family because the look isn’t as common as a 35mm style. 85 mm lenses are a bit more zoomed in and are ideal for portrait photographers and those who really love to capture the intimacy of the human face. I find 85mm lenses a bit more difficult to use in the real world because you have to back up from your subject quite a bit. It’s not great for landscapes or traveling because you can’t get that wider field of vision. Personally, my #1 go-to lens is the 24-70mm f/2.8 II L because it’s a zoom lens and covers the full range of 35 mm and 50 mm. It’s perfect for traveling because you can get wide shots of architecture but also beautiful portraits. I use the 24-70 as my main lens at weddings, always. I used to have the original version, but upgraded to the 24-70 mm f/2.8 II not too long ago. My dream is to get the RF 24-105mm lens at some point. We’ll see! Maybe next Christmas. :)

13. EPSON PERFECTION FILM SCANNER

This will save every photographer TONS of money in the long run. I’ve been scanning my own film for about 10 years and it’s actually become one of my favorite things to do on a weekend. I’d rather be at home scanning film than pretty much anything else. It’s so relaxing and exciting at the same time. There’s something special about handling the negatives yourself and finding out how your images turned out. I use archival photo gloves when handling the negatives so that I avoid getting any oils on the film, and I keep all of my negatives organized in binders. I use an Epson Perfection V750 Pro (you can find used versions on eBay) but there are a few newer models of the Epson Pro scanner, like the V850 Pro, that are similar. I scan both 35 mm and 120 film, as well as polaroids and old printed photographs from my childhood. I use it to scan documents and other things too, so it’s multi-purpose. It’s traveled with me across the country twice and it’s still kicking. It’s a hefty investment but I never have to pay for a photo lab to scan my film for me anymore, so I easily save $100 for every box of film I mail in. It’s worth it, trust me!

14. STUDIO LIGHTS / RING LIGHT

For someone who is just getting into photography and isn’t sure where to start when it comes to studio lighting, a ring light is a great one to start with. Sometimes, I’ll do an entire client shoot with just a ring light. It’s the perfect amount of light for polaroids if you’re shooting indoors, or for glamour shots. Ring lights are common for social media influencers to use when they’re doing videos because it really captures makeup details and makes everyone look good. It’s just flattering and is so much better than overhead lighting if you’re just in your room filming videos. The shape of the ring light creates a lovely eye sparkle too. When I’m doing a full-fledged fashion shoot, I usually use two B400 Alien Bees strobe lights and then use a Neewer 19” ring light at my continuous lighting for my film cameras. I’m on my second Neewer ring light and I love it so much. I even fly with it when I’m traveling for work and it comes with a nice carrying case!

15. POLAROID CAMERA OR INSTAX CAMERA

I’m not sure how it happened but my Polaroid collection seemed to explode overnight. I have so many polaroid cameras. Whenever friends or family members find Polaroid cameras, I end up with them. But I’m not complaining! Polaroids cameras are the epitome of retro photography. And there’s something so gratifying about instant photography and watching the photograph develop in front of you. I mainly use a vintage Polaroid 600 camera because they are very simple and easy to use. They are basically just a point and shoot camera. It takes a little bit of time to understand the best kinds of lighting conditions for Polaroids, but I’ve learned to shoot in the shade when possible, not stand too close or too far away from my subject, and immediately put the Polaroid in my back pocket to develop. They are sensitive to cold temperatures and won’t develop correctly if they aren’t warm. And make sure not to touch the photograph while it’s developing or you’ll get fingerprints in the image! You can read more about shooting with Polaroid 600 cameras in my blog post here. And you can purchase Polaroid 600 film on Amazon or on Polaroid.com! If you feel unsure about buying a vintage camera, you should check out one the new cameras Polaroid is producing, like the Polaroid Now+ Generation 2. It has bluetooth capabilities for connecting for your phone for more creative control. It takes the classic 600 film or Polaroid’s newer film, i-Type.

I usually bring a Polaroid 600 and a Fujfilm Instax Square SQ10 to weddings because I like the Polaroid 600 for special, planned out shots and the SQ10 for all of those inbetween moments because it’s a digital/film hybrid. Instax film is much cheaper so I don’t feel as bad taking more photos. But with the Polaroid brand film, you’re usually in about $1.50-$2.00 per image so I make sure to take my time with those.

Similar to the Holga, Polaroid cameras are somewhat simple but do require a bit of a learning curve to end up with the best photos possible. But regardless, they are super fun to experiment with, look great on a shelf, are exciting to create with, and deserve to continue to be recognized for their magic.

16. GIFT CARD FOR TRAVEL OR HOTELS

As a photographer, I have to constantly find ways to keep myself inspired. I get bored shooting at the same venues and parks over and over again. I try to take a major trip out of the country at least once a year, and a few smaller trips to places I’ve never been in the US whenever I get a chance. We also like to visit the West Coast once a year since we have family and friends out there as well. I’ve somehow become the designated family trip planner because everyone knows I’m the best at finding good deals. Personally, I would love to receive a gift card to Hotels.com, AirBnb, Hopper, or just a Visa gift card!

And just a tip, if traveling for business, make sure to use a business credit card like the Chase Ink Business Card so you get 1.5% cash back! You can find out more here if you’re interested! I’m a bit of a finance freak so I’m always trying to earn points for my spending. :)

Yes. I’m a coupon-clipper kind of girl….

17. ADOBE LIGHTROOM OR PHOTOSHOP SUBSCRIPTION

I don’t know what I’d do without Lightroom. I use it every single day to edit every single photo. Photoshop and Lightroom go hand in hand - Lightroom is great for batch editing and getting it done quickly, while Photoshop is helpful for those photos that need a lot of detailed editing. Lightroom makes it super easy to transfer a file into Photoshop for more intensive editing, and then it will automatically ask if you’d like to save your changes to Lightroom. All of this to say, a Lightroom and/or Photoshop subscription is a great gift for a beginning photographer. Or if they already have Photoshop and Lightroom, it’s always appreciated when someone else covers our yearly subscription! :)

18. APPLE AIR TAGS

When I first heard about AirTags, I found them kind of creepy. I guess the idea of something tracking me and my stuff at all times freaked me out. But I received a pack of 4 for Christmas one year and they’re a game-changer. My husband and I each have them in our work bags so we know if we’ve ever left them behind somewhere. And while we’re traveling, we can track our suitcases and make sure they don’t get left behind somewhere. I joke with my husband that I want to put AirTags on everything we own. Plus, it’s fun to check my phone and watch our little AirTag emoji’s moving about if Chris is at work or my suitcase is being transferred through the airport. You can also get a keychain for the AirTag so you can attach it to your keys or bag. I’ll be getting one for my husband this year because he’s notorious for losing his keys…..

19. AMAZON.COM GIFT CARD

I couldn’t tell you how many times Amazon has saved me. There are times when I have a photo shoot in a few days and I realize I’m almost out of film or that I need some special camera battery and I need it yesterday. Amazon has some of the fastest shipping you can find for niche products like camera batteries, film, and other photography necessities. Also, it’s great if you aren’t sure what to get your photographer friend or family member because all of this photography jargon stresses you out. Believe me, Amazon has something that they want.

20. BUY THEIR WORK FROM THEIR WEBSITE!

Lastly, but most importantly, if your friend or family member who you’re shopping for is a photographer, videographer, or artist of any kind, the best gift you can give them for the holidays is to support their work! Buy their artwork through their website. Book them for a photo shoot. Order their prints. Buy their photo books. Artists are always hustling and never getting back everything they put into their work. It will make their day if you buy their artwork in any capacity. Believe me. Nothing makes me feel more fulfilled or excited than when I sell a photo print or receive a kind message about my photography. Or if you want to make my day, pick up a copy of my book, Temporary Beauty: A Memoir about Panic Disorder and Finding Purpose through Art and Meditation. Many artists and photographers will likely relate to some of the struggles and stories I share in my book.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I hope this list helps you come up with a few gift ideas for the photographer in your life. Or if you’re a photographer yourself, I hope this list reminds you to invest in your business and believe in yourself! I’ve been a full-time photographer since 2012 and it all started with my first Canon 5D Mark II. It truly only takes one amazing camera and one amazing artist to create a successful business.

If you found this post helpful or inspiring, I’d love it if you considered signing up for my Patreon! For as little as $1 a month, you’ll get early access to all of my YouTube videos, plus tons of photos that I don’t post anywhere else. Depending on which tier you choose, you could also receive seasonal prints and/or discounts! I always use all of the proceeds towards cameras, film & processing. Find out more here!

10 Perfect Gift Ideas for Film Photographers from a Photographer's POV

(By using the links and/or codes below it supports Myles Katherine Photography. We may get a small kick back by you doing so.)

Film photography can be a bit of a niche thing and not everyone knows what kind of film or gifts to buy for the photographer in their life. Every year, I end up sending a list of links to my friends and family members with very specific kinds of film and camera gear that I want. Otherwise, no one has any idea what to get me! I’m here to help you find that perfect gift for the film photographer in your life. These are all things that I want too, so *hint hint*, if you’re a friend looking for a gift for me, any of these will do. :) :) Here are 10 Perfect Gift Ideas for Film Photographers from a Photographer's POV!

Holga 135BC

1. HOLGA GCFN OR HOLGA 135BC

If you follow my work, you know the Holga GCFN is my all-time favorite film camera. It’s a 120 film camera and is super affordable, quirky and fun to try out. Every photographer should have one of these, in my opinion. Even if they don’t end up using it, it looks cute on a shelf! It’s a great way to start learning film photography too because it’s easy to use, hard to break and exciting to experiment with. It’s known as a “toy” camera because it’s made of plastic and the photos have a very specific vignette to them, giving the images a surreal and moody atmosphere. I’m obsessed with the Holga camera, which is why I made this blog post and this YouTube video about it. :) The Holga comes in a ton of different colors, which is also why it makes a great camera to collect. I’m currently working on owning one of every color and so far I have about 10 different ones! The colorful ones are more likely to be found on eBay, bought from a secondhand seller. Currently, only the classic black style is being produced, which you can find brand new on Amazon. Hopefully, one day they’ll start producing the colorful ones again and they’ll be a bit easier to find. If you’re photographer friend prefers to shoot 35 mm film, there is a super cute red version that you can buy brand new on Amazon here. I have a blog post and YouTube video about the 35 mm version too! It’s just the 120 version that is currently only available in black if you prefer a brand new camera. And there are other versions of the camera, I just prefer the GCFN version because it has a glass lens, as opposed to a plastic lens, which I find to be a bit sharper.

2. PROFESSIONAL AND UNIQUE FILMS TO TRY

This might seen obvious, but sometimes as a gift-giver, you might have no idea what film to buy for the photographer in your life. If you’re looking to impress, you can never go wrong with Kodak Portra 160 (available in 120 or 35mm) or Kodak Portra 400 (available in 120 or 35mm). It’s quite pricey but is known as one of the best and most accurate color films out there. I hardly ever buy it for myself because of the price, which is why it would make a great gift. Trust me, they won’t be disappointed! If you’re looking for a more affordable, normal film, Kodak Gold 200 is always great too (also available in 120 and 35 mm)! If you’d prefer to buy a more unique and fun film, I’d recommend Lomography LomoChrome Purple (120 or 35mm) or Turquoise (120 or 35mm). These are exactly what they sound like - a purple film and a turquoise film. Not all photographers are down to experiment with these kind of colors but personally, I love them! I’m always looking for ways to make my photos more unique. You can also check out my blog post about some of my favorite color 35 mm films here if you’re interested in reading more!

3. POLAROID CAMERA

Another camera that every photographers should try out at some point! I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love a polaroid. And while those Instax mini’s are cute and great, there’s something classically special about the standard, old school polaroid. For a while, the Polaroid brand was dead and gone. But a company called The Impossible Project began producing film to work with vintage polaroid cameras. It wasn’t the most reliable film at first, but they eventually procured the rights to the Polaroid brand and now produce consistent, beautiful film that works perfectly with vintage polaroid cameras. They also make brand new polaroid cameras, like the, which are also fun and would make an incredible gift! There’s nothing like an instant photograph. it’s a great way to capture moment with friends and families, especially during the holidays! You can scoop up vintage ones on Amazon ( I prefer the classic Polaroid One-Step 600 camera) or Polaroid’s new cameras like the I-2 or Polaroid Now, on Polaroid.com. Plus, they have TONS of other gift ideas on their site, including Bluetooth speakers, camera straps, frames and film styles. They always have great Black Friday / Cyber Monday deals too!

4. RING LIGHT

If your photographer friend has a small studio or likes to take portraits, a ring light is a great gift. I always have a ring light set up in my studio because it’s the perfect amount of light for a perfectly exposed polaroid portrait. They’re a great fill light but can also be used for a million other purposes. If your photographer friend shoots models, it’s great for a makeup artist to use while getting ready for the shoot. The Neewer 19-inch ring light that I have has temperature adjustment, an iPhone selfie holder and brightness control. It’s extremely easy to use and automatically makes every photo look amazing. It’s great for TikTokers too!

5. SSD DRIVE

My husband recently bought a Crucial X6 1 TB portable SSD to use for his work but I ended up stealing it from him because it’s so amazing! For years, I’ve used normal external hard drives and have had issues with them disconnecting from my computer, breaking or just not showing up when I plug them in. An SSD, or solid state drive, doesn’t have any of those mechanical disks inside that are so easy to break with the traditional hard drives. Plus, the one I have is super small, easy to travel with and has tons of storage space. These are incredibly handy for dropping files onto them after a shoot, especially if you’re traveling and worried about losing your files. They’re super fast, shock-resistant and reliable. Photographers can never have too much storage space, especially if they shoot video or scan their own film in high resolution. Those files can take up tons of space and this is the perfect solution for that and is much easier than those desktop hard drives that are huge and unsafe to move around.

WHERE TO BUY:

Crucial X6 1 TB Portable SSD on Amazon

6. ONA BACKPACK OR BAG

ONA is a stylish and long lasting brand of camera bags and backpacks. I’ve had two different ones over the years and I’ve loved them both dearly. They are extremely well-made and the quality is top notch. Any photographer would/should be stoked to receive one of these! I started off with the Monterey style but ultimately switched to the Clifton style because it had space for more cameras. I shoot with a LOT of different film cameras and I typically travel with at least 5 cameras in my backpack at any given time. The inside dividers are adjustable so you can change them to fit all of your weird quirky camera shapes. I also love that they have a refurbish program that I plan on taking advantage of soon. I’ve had my current Ona backpack for at least 10 years and it’s probably about time for a little TLC. For $50 you can send it in and they’ll repair and treat the leather or canvas to make it look brand new! It’s definitely on my Christmas list to myself this year to send mine in and get that done. :) I’m hoping to scoop up one of the shoulder bags one of these days too!

WHERE TO BUY:

ONA The Monterey Leather/Waxed Canvas Backpack
ONA The Clifton Camera Backpack

7. FILM SCANNER

I’ve had my Epson V750 for over 10 years and have definitely run it into the ground. A nice film scanner will save you thousands of dollars in the long run. I scan all of my own film so I never have to pay a film processing company to do it for me. Plus, I get full control over how my images turn out. I can color adjust before or after scanning, depending on my preference, and I can scan in incredible high resolution to make gigantic prints. These scanners last forever. The newest version is the Epson Perfection V850 Pro Photo Scanner. They aren’t cheap but you have to think about it as a long term investment. Scanning film after I get it back from processing is one of the most satisfying and fun parts of my job as a photographer. It’s also just fun to learn the process and to have that control that allows you to fully make your photos your own.

If you’d prefer a film scanner that’s less expensive and much smaller, you can try the Kodak Slide N Scan Digital Film Scanner or Kodak SCANZA Digital Film & Slide Scanner.

8. FUN FILTERS & PRISMS

If you’re looking for something that is quirky, lighthearted and not too expensive, you can always get them an interesting filter or prism to use to create unique photos. I love getting weird with my photos and trying out new techniques. I’ll shoot through empty plastic bottles and clear plastic sandwich bags to create a different atmosphere with my images, but a prism or rainbow filter would probably be a bit more of an exciting gift to open! You could go for the NEEWER 58mm Kaleidoscope Prism Lens Filter or the KOGJAERS Prism Glasses 79mm Handheld Kaleidoscope Prism. These would make great stocking stuffers too!

WHERE TO BUY:

NEEWER 58mm Kaleidoscope Prism Lens Filter on Amazon
KOGJAERS Prism Glasses 79mm Handheld Kaleidoscope Prism on Amazon

9. STORAGE BINDERS FOR NEGATIVES

Storage binders for loose negatives are a great gift too. These are a necessity in my life. I’ve filled quite a few of these over the years. If the photographer in your life tends to leave their film negatives strewn across their house, this is a great way to help them organize them and keep them safe. Make sure to get the sleeves too (available for 120 film or 35 mm). I label all of my binders and negatives and finally have a good system down. Plus, the negative sleeves that go inside are archival quality and will keep the negatives safe for many years to come!

10. GIFT CARDS!

When all else fails, an Amazon gift card is always great because you can find the majority of film styles and cameras on Amazon. KEH camera is another great idea because they sell used camera gear. The majority of film cameras are vintage and used, and keh camera has a great system of checking and rating the quality of used cameras and lenses. I’ve ordered quite a few cameras over the years from KEH and have always had a great experience. If you know that your photographer friend prefers eBay, you can always pick up a gift card there too!

Amazon Gifts Cards

KEH Camera Gift Cards

BONUS IDEA:

I’ve been using Smugmug as my online gallery/storage system for over 12 years. I upload my photos directly from Lightroom and keep all of my photos organized in galleries by year, photo shoot, location or film type. I honestly don’t know what I would do without smugmug. I send gallery links to all of my clients through smugmug and from there, they can download the photos in high-res, order prints and gifts and share the links with others! Not to mention, the smugmug app keeps my photos accessible at all times, and even backs up the photos and videos on my phone! It’s an amazing online storage service and is super affordable for what you get, in my opinion. You can get 15% off of a subscription for your photo friend here!

I hope these ideas help you in your search for the perfect gift! As a full-time photographer, I would be thrilled with any of these gifts and I really think the photographer in your life will love them too!

Have a happy holiday season! And don’t forget to stop by my Amazon storefront for more camera/film recommendations. :)
